Background: Gettysburg National Cemetery was established in the aftermath of the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg, fought July 1–3, 1863, during the Civil War. Recognizing the need for a proper burial ground for the thousands of Union soldiers who had fallen, Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Curtin and local attorney David Wills spearheaded the effort to create a national cemetery. The cemetery was formally dedicated on November 19, 1863, in a ceremony that became one of the most significant moments in American history, marked by President Abraham Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address. Over time, the cemetery was expanded to include the remains of more than 3,500 Union soldiers and later veterans of subsequent wars.
