Background: Fort Gibson National Cemetery is located on land that was once part of the military reservation within the Cherokee Nation. Fort Gibson was established in 1824 by Colonel Matthew Arbuckle as a military post along the "permanent Indian frontier" to keep peace among tribal nations and protect immigrants and traders. The fort served as the end point of the Trail of Tears for Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole tribes.
Due to yellow fever outbreaks, three successive post cemeteries were established at Fort Gibson. In 1868, a seven-acre plot east of the fort was officially converted into a national cemetery, containing remains of soldiers removed from abandoned post cemeteries and Union troops who died in Southwest battles. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 20, 1999.
