Background: Raleigh National Cemetery was established in 1865 during the final weeks of the Civil War when Union forces occupied Raleigh on April 13, 1865. The seven-acre cemetery was built on the site of the former Union military post, Camp Green, and was one of five national cemeteries created in 1865 to provide burial grounds for Union soldiers.

The cemetery consolidated Union soldiers who had been buried throughout the Raleigh area, providing a dignified resting place for those who died in service. By 2005, the cemetery included nearly 6,000 interments, including Medal of Honor recipients, and continues to serve veterans from subsequent conflicts.
