Directions: Located in the north part of Santa Fe city limits, along the east side of US-285, right where it intersects with Guadalupe St.

Background: Following the Civil War, the federal government established Santa Fe National Cemetery for reinterring Union soldiers who died during military activities in the area. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Fe donated the land, located just west of Santa Fe, to the United States in 1870.

However, Santa Fe's status as a national cemetery was brief. In July 1876, the War Department downgraded it to a post cemetery to reduce expenses, transferring the superintendent to Mound City National Cemetery, Illinois, and the quartermaster to local Fort Macy.

Nine years later, the cemetery was re-established as a national cemetery in 1885, restoring its original federal designation and mission to honor Union veterans who served in the Southwest during the Civil War era.
