Background: Angel Fire State Veterans Cemetery originated from Governor Susana Martinez's 2013 State Rural Veterans Cemetery initiative. The David Westphall Veterans Foundation Board and Village of Angel Fire requested Angel Fire as a cemetery location, with Harry Patterson and his wife Brenda donating 10 acres adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
On April 15, 2014, Governor Martinez announced Angel Fire's selection as one of four proposed sites after fierce statewide competition. In September 2018, Governor Martinez announced full funding was secured, with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs providing a $3.2 million grant. Construction began in May 2019, and the first interment occurred on July 27, 2020, for Darrel Fugett, who had volunteered at the adjacent Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
