Background: New Jersey's first state-operated veterans' cemetery was dedicated on May 30, 1986, by Governor Thomas H. Kean as "a lasting memorial to those men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our country's honor and freedom." The facility was jointly funded by state and federal governments and managed by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
On January 3, 1989, the cemetery was renamed to honor U.S. Army Brigadier General William C. Doyle, the principal guiding force behind its development. Located in Arneytown, North Hanover Township, Burlington County, the 225-acre contemporary memorial cemetery was designed to accommodate 171,000 veterans and their family members. The facility serves as a state shrine honoring Armed Forces members, with approximately 13 burials occurring each business day.
