Background: Nebraska Veterans Memorial Cemetery was established in 1888 as part of the Grand Island Veterans’ Home. The original cemetery spanned 2.7 acres and was set aside for residents and spouses living at the home. In 2021 the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs applied for a grant from the National Cemetery Administration to create a state veterans cemetery serving all of the state's veterans. Construction began in 2023 and the finished cemetery was was dedicated on July 12, 2025.
