Background: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, one of the oldest National Cemetery Administration sites, originated from a military post established in 1826 south of St. Louis, Missouri. The first burial occurred on August 5, 1827, when infant Elizabeth Ann Lash was interred at the post cemetery.

Though burials began in 1827, Jefferson Barracks was formally established as a national cemetery in 1866 by joint resolution. Major expansion occurred in 1869 when over 10,200 recovered remains from other Missouri locations were reinterred here, along with 470 smallpox victims from Arsenal Island.

The cemetery was enlarged in 1875 and again in the 1890s. In 1922, an Executive Order assigned 170 acres to the Veterans Bureau. The military post was deactivated in 1946, but cemetery expansion continued. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
