Background: Jefferson City National Cemetery has its origins in the Civil War era, serving as a burial site for soldiers from the surrounding area. The cemetery location was sold to the government by local residents Israel and Mary Read and was surveyed for national cemetery classification during the war.
The first burials date to summer 1861, but the cemetery's official designation as a national cemetery didn't occur until 1867, after approximately 350 interments had been completed. One notable event connected to the cemetery occurred on September 27, 1864, when Confederate guerrilla William Anderson's forces killed 17 Union soldiers and civilians in a train attack near Jefferson City. Almost 10 years later, remains from men who died in the subsequent skirmish were reinterred in the national cemetery.
Jefferson City National Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 1, 1998.
