Directions: Located in the north part of the city of Vicksburg, the cemetery sits on the east side of N Washington St (Business 61), but is accessed from Fort Hill Drive.

Background: Congress passed legislation to establish Vicksburg National Cemetery in 1866, with interments beginning the following year. More than 17,000 troops were buried, making it the largest Union cemetery in the nation. Of these burials, the identity of almost 13,000 soldiers and sailors are unknown. The cemetery includes a significant number of United States Colored Troops that served with in the Civil War. The Cemetery also contains the remains of veterans of the Mexican-American War, Spanish-American War, the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War. Vicksburg National Cemetery was closed to burials in 1961.
