Cemeteries in Mississippi (State)
United States
Mississippi was admitted to the Union as the twentieth state on December 10, 1817. Three major indigenous groups constituted the earliest inhabitants: the Choctaw (approximately 20,000), the Natchez (about 4,500), and the Chickasaw (about 5,000). Spanish explorers first explored the region, but it later became a French colony. Agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, transportation, utilities, and health services represent Mississippi's primary industries throughout its development.
Vicksburg National Cemetery contains more than 17,000 Union soldiers, making it one of the most significant military burial grounds. Historic Natchez City Cemetery, established in 1822, contains reinterred remains from earlier burial grounds including private plantation and churchyard sites. Glenwood Cemetery, dating to at least 1856, includes Confederate soldier burials. Cemetery records in Mississippi preserve the heritage of diverse communities and document cemeteries in Mississippi across generations of residents.
