Directions: Located just outside of Sharpsburg town limits on the east side, the cemetery sits on the south side of Shepherdstown Pike (Highway 34).

Background: Antietam National Cemetery, one of the Civil War–era cemeteries in the national system, contains 4,776 Union graves, 38 percent of them unidentified, marked by small square stones. Dedicated on September 17, 1867, the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, it became a revered burial site for soldiers from Antietam, South Mountain, Monocacy, and other Maryland actions. Non-Civil War burials, including veterans and their spouses from the Spanish-American War through Korea, continued until the cemetery was closed to new interments in 1953, with a rare exception in 2000 for a USS Cole sailor.
