Directions: Located within Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, the cemetery sits along the east-edge of Chalmette Battlefield, with its main entrance along W St. Bernard Way at Military Cemetery Rd.

Background: Chalmette National Cemetery was established in May 1864 with the intent to inter Union soldiers who died in Louisiana during the Civil War. To date, more than 15,000 graves contain remains of veterans from the Civil War, War of 1812, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War. In 1933, responsibility of the Chalmette National Cemetery was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service.
