Background: Louisiana National Cemetery was established in 2012 as an expansion of the nearby Port Hudson National Cemetery, which closed the same year after serving the region since 1867. Located in East Baton Rouge Parish approximately six miles from Zachary, Louisiana, the cemetery was created to serve the estimated 293,000 veterans and eligible family members in the parish and surrounding area. The National Cemetery Administration purchased the 103.8-acre site in 2011, consisting of agricultural fields and woodlands that had remained largely unchanged since at least 1941. The cemetery opened on October 24, 2012, replacing Port Hudson National Cemetery, which had been established to bury federal dead from the Civil War Battle of Port Hudson. This historic 48-day siege occurred from May to July 1863, ending with the Confederate surrender on July 9 after General Franklin Gardner learned of Vicksburg's fall. The new cemetery continues the legacy of honoring veterans in a region with rich military history spanning multiple nations' control over three centuries.
