Background: Battle Grove Cemetery is the location where the second Battle of Cynthiana took place on June 12, 1864. The ridge that now holds the cemetery was the site of the Confederate force under John H. Morgan, who captured Cynthiana the day before, only to be surprised at dawn by Union troops under Stephen G. Burbridge and routed in a brief but decisive engagement. In May 1869 the cemetery became the site of one of Kentucky’s earliest Civil War memorials when the local Confederate Memorial Association erected a white-marble obelisk surrounded by the graves of 47 Confederate soldiers — a monument many believe to be the first Confederate memorial in the state and perhaps the second oldest in the nation. Battle Grove Cemetery has since evolved into the main public cemetery for Cynthiana.
