Background: Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa, was established during the Civil War to inter soldiers who died in five military hospitals set up in the area, which served troops transported from Southern battlefields. Originally part of Oakland Cemetery, the 2.75-acre site was donated to the U.S. government in the mid-19th century. By 1871, it held 627 interments, including 600 known Union soldiers, 27 unknowns, and eight Confederate prisoners of war. Additional reinterments occurred in 1908 from Fort Yates, North Dakota, and in 1948 from Des Moines. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
