Background: Marion National Cemetery in Grant County, Indiana, was established in 1889 alongside the Marion Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, following efforts led by Congressman George W. Steele. The first burial occurred in May 1890. The home was renamed Marion Sanatorium in 1920, and its administration transferred to the Veterans Administration in 1930. The cemetery expanded with additional land in 1974 and 1988, and in 1973 it became part of the National Cemetery system under the National Cemetery Act, receiving its current name. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Notable memorials on the grounds include the 1901 Remember the Maine monument, a 1913 tribute to the Minnesota 2nd Regiment, a Vietnam Memorial (1990), and a Blue Star Memorial Marker dedicated in 2005.
