Background: New Albany National Cemetery in New Albany, Indiana, was established in 1862 to bury Union soldiers from the nearby Civil War training center at Camp Noble and to reinter those who had died in local hospitals. The original 5.5-acre cemetery was purchased from Dr. Charles Bowman, and by 1870 it contained over 2,000 known and 698 unknown burials, including segregated sections for African-American soldiers of the U.S. Colored Troops. The cemetery reflects New Albany’s strategic role during the Civil War as a supply, training, and hospital center. Surrounded today by a suburban residential area, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
