Background: Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, established on land formerly part of the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant about 50 miles south of Chicago, honors the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln, who authorized the creation of national cemeteries during the Civil War with legislation signed on July 17, 1862. The cemetery’s development was largely made possible by Congressman George E. Sangmeister, who helped secure 982 acres for its creation. Significant milestones include the dedication of a Blue Star Memorial Marker on September 15, 2000, a Pearl Harbor memorial obelisk on May 12, 2001, and a life-size bronze statue of Lincoln on September 11, 2016. The cemetery features a memorial walk with tributes to 20th-century service members and continues to serve as a place of national remembrance.
