Background: Danville National Cemetery, located in Vermilion County, Illinois, was established in 1898 on land once inhabited by Native American tribes and later settled due to its rich natural resources. Although Danville saw no Civil War combat, many local men served, and those who returned often required care. In response, Congress authorized the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1897, and a cemetery was designated the following year. The current cemetery site was laid out in 1901, with earlier burials reinterred there. Originally managed by the Soldiers Home, it became part of the Veterans Administration in 1930 and was incorporated into the National Cemetery System in 1973. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
