Cemeteries in Danville (City)

Vermilion County, Illinois, United States
Danville, the county seat of Vermilion County, Illinois, was founded in 1827 along the Vermilion River and quickly grew into a regional center of commerce and government.

The city developed near salt springs once utilized by Indigenous peoples, including the Kickapoo, and later by early European-American settlers for salt production. Danville’s growth accelerated with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century, transforming it into a hub for coal mining, manufacturing, and trade. Settlers of English, German, and Irish descent formed the early population, and religious life included Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, and later African American churches. Danville was the childhood home of comedian and actor Dick Van Dyke and served as a cultural and economic anchor for east-central Illinois. Governed as a chartered city under Illinois law, Danville remains a vital part of the state’s industrial heritage.

Cemeteries such as Spring Hill Cemetery preserve the city’s early pioneer and labor history.
