Cemeteries in Rock Island Arsenal (Island)

Rock Island County, Illinois, United States
Rock Island Arsenal, located on Arsenal Island in the Mississippi River between the cities of Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa, has been a major U.S. military installation since its official establishment in 1862.

The island was originally the site of Fort Armstrong, built in 1816 to protect American interests after the War of 1812 and to monitor Native American activity in the region. During the Civil War, the arsenal served as a Union prison camp for Confederate soldiers. In the postwar years, it evolved into one of the nation's primary centers for ordnance manufacturing, producing weapons, equipment, and military vehicles. The facility has played key roles in every major U.S. conflict since the 19th century. The population working at the arsenal has included military personnel, civilian engineers, and skilled laborers.

Cemeteries such as the Rock Island Confederate Cemetery and Rock Island National Cemetery preserve the site’s complex military legacy.
