Background: Mound City National Cemetery, located in Pulaski County near Mound City, Illinois, was established in 1864 near a major Civil War hospital complex and naval shipyard that served the Union's Mississippi Squadron. Initially, city buildings were converted into hospitals to treat wounded soldiers from battles such as Shiloh and Vicksburg. The cemetery’s original interments were soldiers who died at the hospital, and it later included casualties from nearby battle sites. By 1871, the cemetery held about 2,300 known and over 2,400 unknown servicemen. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
