Cemeteries in Hawaii (State)

United States
Hawaii, the 50th state of the United States, is an island chain located in the central Pacific Ocean.

Originally settled by Polynesians around 1,500 years ago, Hawaii developed a distinct culture and governance system under Native Hawaiian chiefs and monarchs. In 1778, British explorer Captain James Cook became the first European to visit the islands. In 1810, King Kamehameha I unified the islands under a single Hawaiian Kingdom. The 19th century saw the arrival of American missionaries, followed by plantation owners who cultivated sugar and pineapple using laborers from China, Japan, Portugal, and the Philippines. In 1893, the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by American settlers with U.S. support. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and became a territory in 1900, achieving statehood in 1959.

Cemeteries such as Oahu Cemetery and Royal Mausoleum preserve Hawaii’s Indigenous and colonial legacies.
