Background: Marietta National Cemetery, originally called the Marietta and Atlanta National Cemetery, was established in 1866 to honor nearly 10,000 Union soldiers who died during General Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign in the Civil War. Local Union loyalist Henry Cole offered land in hopes of creating a shared burial ground for both Union and Confederate dead, but his vision of reconciliation was rejected by both sides. Instead, the land was officially donated to the U.S. government for a national cemetery, with further expansion in 1870 bringing it to over 23 acres. Designed by Union Chaplain Thomas B. Van Horne with an ornate circular layout, it became one of the most elaborate cemeteries of its time. The cemetery’s historical significance was recognized when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1998.
