Cemeteries in Canton (City)

Cherokee County, Georgia, United States
Canton, located in Cherokee County, Georgia, was incorporated in 1833 on land formerly part of the Cherokee Nation.

The town’s founding followed the forced removal of the Cherokee people during the 1830s, a tragic episode known as the Trail of Tears. Originally named Etowah, it was soon renamed Canton in hopes of developing a silk industry akin to the Chinese city of the same name. Although silk production never materialized, Canton grew into a center for agriculture and later textile manufacturing. Settlers were primarily of Scots-Irish and English descent, and Protestant denominations such as Baptist and Methodist shaped early religious life. The city served as the county seat and became a hub for trade and governance in north Georgia. Though it remained small through the 19th and early 20th centuries, Canton experienced rapid suburban growth in recent decades.

Historic cemeteries like Riverview and Macedonia Memorial reflect Canton’s early settler and civic history.
