Background: The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville was established in 2001 on 142 acres transferred from the Georgia Forestry Commission and is located about five miles south of downtown Milledgeville along Georgia Highway 112. Designed to eventually serve over 100,000 veterans, spouses, and eligible dependents, the cemetery includes an administration center, chapel, carillon, columbarium shelters, a six-acre lake, and a ceremonial area. As of December 31, 2022, 4,988 individuals had been interred. A significant milestone was the opening of its Phase III expansion in October 2018, adding 15 acres with 1,520 crypts and 320 niches. The cemetery hosts annual ceremonies for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Wreaths Across America, drawing community participation and honoring military service.
