Cemeteries in Baldwin County (County)

Georgia, United States
Baldwin County, located in central Georgia, was established in 1803 and named in honor of Abraham Baldwin, a U.S. senator and one of Georgia’s signers of the U.S. Constitution.

The area was originally part of Creek Nation territory and opened to European-American settlement following land cessions in the early 19th century. Milledgeville, the county seat, was founded in 1803 and served as Georgia’s state capital from 1807 to 1868, making Baldwin County a political and cultural center during the antebellum period. Settlers were primarily of English and Scots-Irish descent, with Methodist and Baptist churches playing central roles in community life. The county’s economy was historically driven by agriculture and government services, with enslaved labor supporting large plantations before the Civil War. During the war, Milledgeville was briefly occupied by Union forces during Sherman’s March to the Sea.

Cemeteries such as Memory Hill Cemetery preserve Baldwin County’s legacy of political leadership and early settlement.
