Cemeteries in Sumter County (County)

Sumter County, located in central Florida, was established in 1853 and named in honor of General Thomas Sumter, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Originally inhabited by the Seminole people, the region was the site of significant conflict during the Second Seminole War, including the pivotal 1835 Dade Massacre. Following U.S. control, settlers of English, Scottish, and Irish descent moved into the area, establishing agricultural communities based on cotton, cattle, and later citrus. Baptist and Methodist congregations were among the earliest religious institutions. The county was governed under the U.S. territorial system before Florida achieved statehood in 1845. Sumter remained largely rural for over a century, but experienced rapid population growth in the late 20th century due to the expansion of The Villages retirement community. Today, the county balances its agricultural heritage with residential development.
