Background: St. Augustine National Cemetery, located in the historic city of St. Augustine, Florida, was officially designated a national cemetery in 1881, though its use as a burial ground dates back to 1828 following the U.S. acquisition of Florida in 1821. Originally part of a Franciscan monastery within the Spanish-walled city, the land transitioned to military use during various colonial periods. The cemetery became the final resting place for soldiers, particularly those who died in the Second Seminole War, including Maj. Francis L. Dade's command, whose remains were reinterred there in 1842 and memorialized with three coquina pyramids. Over the years, the site expanded and was improved with additions like a coquina wall (1893), added acreage (1912–1913), and Spanish-style structures (1938), preserving its historic character in America’s oldest city.
