Background: Sarasota National Cemetery was established as part of the National Cemetery Expansion Act of 2003, which aimed to provide burial options in underserved areas. Following a demographic study, the Sarasota area was identified as needing such a facility. In 2007, the Department of Veterans Affairs purchased land from the Hawkins family, who had operated it as a ranch since the 1870s. The cemetery was formally dedicated in 2008 and opened for burials in 2009, becoming the sixth national cemetery in Florida and the 127th in the national cemetery system.
