Cemeteries in Pinellas County (County)

Florida, United States
Pinellas County, located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, was officially established in 1912 after separating from Hillsborough County.

The peninsula was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people before Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century. Although claimed by Spain, significant settlement did not occur until the 19th century, when pioneers of European descent—primarily Scottish, English, and American—moved into the area. The name “Pinellas” comes from the Spanish term “La Punta Piñal,” meaning “Point of Pines,” referring to the region’s natural landscape. Early settlers engaged in citrus farming, fishing, and tourism. The development of railroads in the late 1800s spurred rapid growth, especially in cities like St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Pinellas was part of Spanish Florida, then became a U.S. territory in 1821 and later a state in 1845. Today, it is one of Florida’s most densely populated counties.

Historic cemeteries such as Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park preserve the memory of its early residents.
