Palm Beach County, located on Florida’s southeastern coast, was established in 1909 and named for the lush palm-lined beaches that characterized its early settlements.

Originally home to the Jaega and later the Seminole people, the region saw limited European colonization during the Spanish colonial era. Substantial development began in the late 19th century with the arrival of American settlers, many from the Northeast, following the extension of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway. The area became a winter destination for wealthy industrialists and socialites, especially in the town of Palm Beach, established in the 1890s. The population was primarily white Protestant, with African American laborers contributing significantly to early construction and agriculture. The county was originally part of Dade County before its division. Over time, Palm Beach County became a mix of agricultural centers and coastal resorts.
