Cemeteries in Leon County (County)

Florida, United States
Leon County, located in Florida’s Panhandle region, was established in 1824 and named in honor of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León.

The area was originally inhabited by the Apalachee people and was the site of several Spanish missions during the 17th century. Following the cession of Florida from Spain to the United States in 1821, settlers from Georgia and the Carolinas established cotton plantations in the fertile Red Hills region. These early European-American settlers were predominantly Protestant and relied heavily on enslaved African labor. Tallahassee, designated as Florida’s capital in 1824, lies within Leon County and has remained the political center of the state ever since. The county played a significant role during the antebellum period and Civil War due to its plantation economy.

Cemeteries such as the Old City Cemetery in Tallahassee reflect Leon County’s early settler and political heritage, preserving graves dating back to the 1820s.
