Background: Barrancas National Cemetery, located within the U.S. Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, originated as a small burial ground near the Marine Hospital and was expanded into a naval cemetery in 1838. During the Civil War, many casualties from both Union and Confederate forces were interred there. The site gained national cemetery status on January 30, 1868, when it was transferred to the War Department. By 1869, it held approximately 1,310 burials, including 673 unknown Union soldiers. The cemetery has since expanded with additional land transfers from the Naval Air Station in 1944, 1950, 1986, and 1990 to accommodate continued interments.
