Background: Jacksonville National Cemetery was established in response to the 1997 closure of St. Augustine National Cemetery to new interments, leaving northern Florida without a local veterans’ burial option. Authorized under the National Cemetery Expansion Act of 2003, the site was acquired by the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2008 from city-owned land previously used for ranching. The cemetery was formally dedicated later that year and opened for burials in 2009, becoming Florida’s seventh national cemetery and the 128th in the national cemetery system.
