Cemeteries in Jacksonville (City)

Duval County, Florida, United States
Jacksonville, located in Duval County along the St. Johns River, was founded in 1822 and named in honor of General Andrew Jackson, then military governor of the Florida Territory.

The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people and later explored by the French, who established Fort Caroline in 1564, and the Spanish, who soon took control. After centuries under colonial rule, Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821. Early settlers to Jacksonville were primarily of English and Scottish descent, and Protestant churches, particularly Baptist and Episcopal, played key roles in community life. The city developed as a shipping and rail hub during the 19th century and later became a winter resort destination. Jacksonville was significantly damaged during the Civil War and again in the Great Fire of 1901 but rebuilt as a major urban center.

Historic cemeteries like Old City Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery preserve the legacy of its early residents.
