Cemeteries in Middlesex County (Historical county)
Connecticut, United States
Middlesex County, established in 1785, was located in the lower Connecticut River Valley and named after Middlesex in England.
Though Connecticut counties lost governmental function in 1960, Middlesex County continues as a historical and geographical reference. The region was originally home to the Wangunk and other Algonquian-speaking peoples before English settlers arrived in the 17th century, founding towns such as Middletown (1650) and Saybrook (1635). Saybrook began as an independent colony before merging with Connecticut in 1644. The county developed as a shipbuilding, maritime, and agricultural center due to its access to the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the area attracted immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and Italy, who supported growing industries in tools, textiles, and river trade. Though county governance was dissolved, towns within the historic Middlesex County—such as Middletown, Essex, and Old Saybrook—retain strong identities.
Cemeteries like Indian Hill and Riverside in Middletown preserve the area's colonial and industrial legacy.
