Background: The Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado was authorized by the Colorado Legislature in 1999 to honor the state's veterans and began construction in June 2001. Completed on September 4, 2002, the cemetery officially opened the following day, September 5, with its first interment being Aidan J. Quinn, a World War I veteran. Located on 22.5 acres in Grand Junction, the cemetery includes 3,337 burial units for both casketed and cremated remains, as well as 775 memorial garden plots. Designed to provide a dignified resting place, it features landscaped interment areas, columbaria, and memorial walks for reflection.
