Directions: Located within Sutter Buttes State Park, access starts from N Butte Rd in Pennington, at the intersection with a dirt road marked "9334". This road leads into the park. The road is normally kept gated and locked, as the state park is not currently open to the public (as of this writing August 24, 2026).

Background: Peace Valley Cemetery is a small family burial ground on an oak-shaded hill overlooking Peace Valley, on the north side of the Sutter Buttes south of Pennington. Aaron Pugh homesteaded in Peace Valley from the 1850s, and he, his wives, and several of his children are buried here. A memorial plaque dedicated in 1950 identifies the site as Peace Valley Cemetery. The cemetery is also known as Pugh Cemetery, a later alternate name that became common in some sources. In 2003, the California Department of Parks and Recreation acquired about 1,785 acres in Peace Valley for Sutter Buttes State Park.
