Background: Nicolaus Cemetery is a rural burial ground east of the town of Nicolaus in southern Sutter County, California, in the Sacramento Valley near the Feather River. A 1972 Sutter County Museum bulletin notes the cemetery lies about one mile east of town; the first recorded burial was in 1861, with earlier burials marked by wood destroyed in floods. The site was part of the Hermann Minden Ranch.
