Background: Mare Island Naval Cemetery, the oldest naval cemetery west of the Mississippi River, was established in 1856 shortly after the Navy began operating the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1854, with burials continuing until 1921. Located within the former shipyard in Vallejo, California, it holds around 900 interments, including the daughter of Francis Scott Key, three Medal of Honor recipients, and six Russian sailors from the Civil War era. The shipyard closed in 1996 under the BRAC Act, and most of the property, including the cemetery, was transferred to the City of Vallejo in 2002. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery came under the care of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in November 2023.
