Cemeteries in Solano County (County)
California, United States
Solano County, established in 1850 as one of California’s original counties, is located in the northeastern San Francisco Bay Area.
The region was originally inhabited by the Patwin, a branch of the Wintun people. Under Spanish and later Mexican rule, it became part of several land grants, including Rancho Suisun and Rancho Los Putos, within Alta California. The county was named after Chief Solano, a Patwin leader baptized by Franciscan missionaries at Mission San Francisco de Solano. Following the U.S. annexation of California, Anglo-American settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, along with Chinese, Portuguese, and later Filipino and Latino immigrants. Towns such as Benicia and Vallejo played key roles in California’s early statehood; Benicia briefly served as the state capital in 1853. The arrival of the railroad and military installations like Mare Island Naval Shipyard spurred regional growth.
Cemeteries such as Benicia Arsenal Post Cemetery and Rockville Cemetery have served the county’s communities from the 19th century to today.
