Cemeteries in San Bruno (City)

San Mateo County, California, United States
San Bruno, located in northern San Mateo County, traces its modern origins to the mid-19th century but was originally inhabited by the Ramaytush Ohlone people.

Under Spanish rule, the area became part of the lands associated with Mission San Francisco de Asís. During the Mexican period, it formed part of Rancho Buri Buri, granted in 1835. After California became a U.S. state in 1850, the area saw settlement by Anglo-American pioneers, including dairy and vegetable farmers. The city was named after Saint Bruno of Cologne, likely by early Spanish explorers. San Bruno grew with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad and later with the expansion of El Camino Real. The city formally incorporated in 1914. Significant immigration in the 20th century brought Italian, Irish, Filipino, and Latino populations.

Golden Gate National Cemetery, established in 1937, along with San Bruno’s own local cemeteries, have served the city from the early 20th century to the present.
