Background: Salem Memorial Park was first established in 1891 as the New Salem Cemetery by San Francisco’s Congregation Beth Israel, originally located in City Cemetery of San Francisco. When the city banned new burials in 1902, the Congregation exhumed remains from the cemetery and moved them to the present-day location in Colma during the years 1901 to 1907. In 2004, the cemetery’s ownership transferred from Congregation Beth Israel-Judea to Congregations Emanu-El and Sherith Israel, uniting Salem with neighboring Jewish burial grounds in the area under joint stewardship.
