Background: Home of Peace Cemetery was established by Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco in January 1889 after the city's rapid growth and ordinances banning burials within San Francisco prompted Jewish congregations to relocate burial grounds to Colma. This 20-acre site became the congregation's third cemetery following earlier sites in Pacific Heights and what is now Dolores Park.
