Background: San Francisco National Cemetery, the first national cemetery established on the West Coast, was designated by the War Department on December 12, 1884, on nine acres within the Presidio—a military post founded by Spain in 1776 and transferred to U.S. control in 1846. Initially used for burials from the post cemetery and relocated remains from abandoned frontier forts, the site grew in importance alongside the Presidio’s evolution into a key military base. Interments include veterans of the Civil War, Indian Wars, and overseas conflicts in the Pacific. The Presidio was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 and transferred to the National Park Service in 1994.
