Background: Miramar National Cemetery, located in northern San Diego near the historic Scripps Ranch area, was established to meet the burial needs of the region’s large veteran population after nearby Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery reached capacity. The site, once part of Edward W. Scripps’ estate and later Camp Kearny, became Naval Air Station Miramar in 1947 and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in 1997. In 2008, the Marine Corps leased 313 acres of this land to the National Cemetery Administration, with about one-third preserved for endangered species. Miramar National Cemetery was dedicated in January 2010, and the first interment took place on November 22 of that year.
