Background: Anaheim Cemetery was founded in 1866 by German-immigrant settlers of the Los Angeles Vineyard Society who purchased farmland east of the town to create the first public cemetery in what is now Orange County. Over the years it became the resting place for several thousand early settlers, including prominent local families and more than 500 war veterans. The grounds feature the West Coast’s first community mausoleum (completed in 1914) and are marked by the Pioneer Memorial Archway, donated in 1917 by Frederick A. Hartmann.
