Background: Sierra Mountain Cemetery, better known as Truckee Cemetery, traces its origins to the early 1870s, when the local Masonic Lodge No. 200 and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows joined forces to purchase land for a formal cemetery. The first recorded burial was that of James J. Mathews, owner of the American Hotel, on September 17, 1873. Around 1873–1874, earlier burials from the old Truckee Burying Grounds on South Hill—an area now believed to lie beneath the Winter Creek subdivision—were reinterred at the new cemetery, including William Hill, who died in the 1871 fire that destroyed his parents’ Kinnebec Hotel. Over time, the cemetery became the resting place for Truckee’s early settlers, loggers, miners, and railroad workers. The Truckee Cemetery District was established in 1941 to manage the site, which officially adopted the name Sierra Mountain Cemetery in 1964. Today, it stands as a historic landmark preserving the memory of the people who shaped the Sierra Nevada town.
